Roofing & Roof Replacement in Bristol

Re-roofing, flat roofs, leadwork and roof repairs for homes across Bristol. From period slate and clay tile roofs to flat roofs on modern extensions, we fix the problem properly so your roof stays watertight for years.

Roof Replacements Done Properly

Built for Bristol’s Older Homes

Many Bristol homes, from Georgian houses in Clifton to Victorian terraces in Redland and Bishopston, still have their original slate or clay tile roofs. After 100 years, the slates, battens, leadwork and sometimes the timbers underneath need attention.

We don’t just patch over the problem. Where a roof needs replacing, we strip it back, check and repair the timbers, fit a new breathable membrane and battens, and re-cover it with materials that suit the house, including conservation-area roofs.

Built on Weatherproof Integrity

Built to Keep the Weather Out

A good roof isn’t just the tiles you can see. What’s underneath (the membrane, ventilation, leadwork and insulation) is what keeps your home dry and warm for years.

Breathable Membranes & Ventilation

We fit a breathable membrane under the slates or tiles. It keeps rain out but lets moisture escape, and with proper ventilation at the eaves it protects the roof timbers from condensation and rot.

Proper Leadwork

Valleys, flashings and chimney details are made from sheet lead, cut and fitted to the roof, not sealed with tape or mastic that cracks within a few years.

Insulation to Building Regulations

When a large part of a roof is replaced, Building Regulations usually require the insulation to be upgraded too. We include this in the job, so your home is warmer and the work is fully compliant.

One Point of Contact

You deal with one person from survey to handover. We keep you updated as the work progresses and send photos of the parts of the roof you can’t see yourself.

How We Work

  2. Scaffolding & Protection

Scaffolding goes up with edge protection, and we cover any open areas at the end of each day to keep your home dry while the work is under way.

  3. Timbers, Membrane & Lead

Damaged timbers are repaired or replaced, then we fit the new membrane, battens and leadwork around valleys and chimneys.

  4. Covering & Handover

We lay the slates or tiles, fit the ridge and verges, check every detail and take the scaffolding down. Where Building Control applies, you receive the completion certificate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about planning permissions, Building Regulations Part L, and managing roof replacements in Bristol.

Ask Our Engineers Directly
How do I know if my roof needs a complete replacement or just repairs?

If your roof has isolated slipped tiles or minor flashing leaks, local repairs are often sufficient. However, if your roof is over 60–80 years old, has rotted battens, sagging rafters, pervasive nail sickness (where rusting nails allow tiles to slide repeatedly), or widespread damp in the loft, a full strip and re-covering is far more cost-effective than continuous patch repairs. We provide a full drone survey and photographic inspection before advising either approach.

Do I need Building Regulations approval to replace a roof in Bristol?

Yes. Under UK Building Regulations (Part L), whenever more than 50% of a roof covering is renovated or replaced, the thermal performance must be upgraded to modern standards (achieving a target U-value of 0.18 W/m²K or better for pitched roofs). As certified contractors, Archex oversees the inspection and delivers the final building control compliance certificate, ensuring full legal validity when selling your property.

How long does a full residential re-roof typically take?

A standard terraced or semi-detached Bristol home usually takes between 10 to 15 working days (2 to 3 weeks), depending on the complexity of chimney flashing, lead valleys, and structural timber repairs. Scaffolding is generally erected 2 days prior to commencement and dismantled within 48 hours of final client sign-off.

Will our home be protected from rain while the roof is stripped?

Absolutely. We strip roofs in calculated sections and install breathable waterproof membrane immediately. At the end of every working day—or whenever Atlantic weather shifts unexpectedly—our site leads deploy heavy-duty commercial tarpaulin covers, battened tight to the structure. Your home remains 100% dry and secure throughout.

Do you work on roofs in Conservation Areas or Listed Buildings?

Yes. A significant portion of our commissions are in Clifton, Redland, Cotham, and Kingsdown Conservation Areas. We work with Bristol City Council planning officers to source matching natural Welsh Penrhyn slate, Spanish slates, authentic clay pantiles, and hand-dressed BS 1178 lead flashings to honour all heritage conservation stipulations.

What warranties and guarantees do you provide on new roofs?

All our complete re-roofing projects include a comprehensive 10-year contractor workmanship guarantee, backed by manufacturer material warranties ranging from 20 to 50 years for slates and EPDM systems. We also provide insurance-backed warranty options for complete client peace of mind.
